Thing 21: Other Social Networks

So many networks, not so much time. I read the articles and especially enjoyed the one from BlogJunction. I joined the 23 Things on a Stick Ning. I had already joined Ning as part of my participation in the Midwest Library Technology conference this spring. Ning was a great spot to learn about the conference before it was held and to see presentations and additional materials after the excellent meeting.

In terms of other networks, I do belong to GoodReads and Flickr. I look forward to joining 43 things and working on my life list. While I find Gather to be interesting for more personal interests, I think spending time at Web Junction would be more fruitful for my work as a librarian. There are some valuable classes and tools available there. I saw a lot of groups on Gather that only had one member, and many had some very personal or esoteric interests. I look forward to exploring more. It was notable that during the Republican National Convention in Saint Paul much of the communication among the protesters was conducted on Twitter. It shows the power of social networking and its prevalence among younger people. If we want to attract them to libraries and communicate with them we need to stay aware of social software.
